Missouri to Continue Refugee Resettlement in 2020

This press release from the Missouri Catholic Conference can be found on their website.

In a letter to the U.S. State Department, Missouri Governor Mike Parson stated that Missouri would continue to accept refugees for resettlement. This announcement comes after President Trump issued an executive order that requires governors to state publicly whether their states will continue to accept refugees.

“Missouri has a long and rich history of immigration, dating back to America’s earliest explorers, fur traders, and missionaries,” Parson said in his letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “Today, Missouri’s population includes thousands of refugees who have become vital members of our communities.”

For nearly 40 years, Catholic Charities has been resettling refugees in our state. These people have found safety in our communities after fleeing violence and fear of persecution, in many cases because of their religious or political beliefs. As Catholics, we are called to welcome the stranger, and we are abundantly thankful to Governor Parson for agreeing to continue the proud tradition of refugee resettlement in Missouri.
