Job Summary

The Director of Counseling Services plays a pivotal role in the agency’s program management team by providing oversight and development of counseling programs and clinical mental health services for Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri. This leadership position is responsible for strategic program direction that upholds the mission and integrity of Catholic Charities and ensures delivery of excellent faith-based mental health services through monitoring and compliance, staff training and formation, and stakeholder engagement. This role serves as a leader in collaborating with agency leadership and program staff to address program challenges, nurture community relationships, and advocate for client rights/needs.

Possesses a strong commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities, including the understanding of Catholic Social Teaching and ability to demonstrate the philosophy and values of the agency. The identity of the agency is clearly Catholic. As such, Catholic Charities adheres to the social and moral teachings of the Catholic Church. This is a full-time, exempt position. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervising strategic planning and program management in the following areas:

  • Collaborating with agency leadership to uphold strong fiscal management in the development, monitoring, and administration of yearly budgets.
  • Identifying, sharing, and endorsing best practices for program development.
  • Coordinating with agency leadership to guarantee the execution and adherence to all agency policies and procedures.
  • Exercising primary supervision over counseling programs and therapeutic service providers by staying current on the programmatic knowledge of all service providers.
  • Ensuring that services comply with all contractual and reporting requirements to local, state, and national funding entities, achieve required outcomes, and deliver quality and compassionate mental health services that incorporate client voice and meet client needs.
  • Collaborating with agency leadership to lead the process for program accreditation for
  • Council on Accreditation (COA).

Working with agency leadership to ensure that therapeutic service providers receive comprehensive and continuous orientation, training, supervision, and assessments, including annual performance evaluations, fostering a culture of ongoing quality enhancement, growth, and sustainability.

Serves as a liaison cultivating and sustaining positive working connections with agency leadership, peers, and program staff, as well as local and regional service partners, and regional and national organizations, to ensure the delivery of high-quality client services and the advancement of program initiatives.

Agency Identity and Mission

The work of Catholic Charities serves as an expression of the ministry of evangelization of the Roman Catholic Church by serving the poor and most vulnerable in our society. Although staff are not to proselytize, they are, however, expected to be guided in every way by the teachings of the Catholic faith in their daily work. These include church teachings on abortion, sterilization, abstinence, and the sanctity of the family as well as fidelity to the Catholic ethical religious directive of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. In addition, all staff are invited to attend periodic Catholic Masses. As employees of Catholic Charities, it is further expected that staff will adhere to the Diocesan code of conduct. Employees are expected to not only perform duties consistent with the Doctrines of the Catholic faith, but outside of the workplace they are expected to refrain from publishing any communication in any form, electronic or otherwise, that affiliates them with Catholic Charities in a manner that is inconsistent with the doctrine of the Roman Catholic faith.

  • Full-time staff members are required to attend their designated work site from Monday to
  • Friday, typically from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Core working hours may be subject to change based on the specific role and the requirements of the program.
  • Participates effectively as a team member through communication, cooperation, information sharing, and problem-solving.
  • Attends and participates in staff trainings, meetings, activities, and programs as required.
  • Utilizes common software and digital applications (Microsoft Office suite, Outlook, Teams, time-keeping software, etc.).

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises program staff/therapeutic service providers, AmeriCorps members, interns, and volunteers as assigned, including providing the required hours of clinical supervision to staff certified social workers as outlined in the Social Work State Boards (this is generally one hour per week of individual supervision per supervisee over a three-year period, but varies by state board requirements and group hours provided).

Education and/or Experience

An advanced degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to Catholic Charities’ mission and services and a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or clinical social work is required, and three to five years’ experience in management and delivery of clinical services is required. Demonstrated success in trauma-informed care practices and knowledge of Catholic Social Teaching is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW); supervisor by the State of Missouri Social Work Board or supervisor certification eligible.

Other Qualifications

Ability to successfully pass Family Care Safety Registry and criminal background checks and requires completion of the Protecting God’s Children VIRTUS training session. Licensed to operate a motor vehicle and ability to meet agency auto insurance coverage requirements.

Local travel may be required.
